New York Fashion Week has always stood apart from the rest of the major fashion capitals in a lot of ways, one of those being its display – or lack thereof – of men’s fashion. While London, Milan, and Paris each have separate events for the menswear shows, New York has always chosen to do it all at once, resulting in a larger-scale biannual spectacle and a whole lot of action. But now, men’s fashion in the Big Apple might be getting its own time to shine.
According to The New York Times, the CFDA has been circulating emails in talks of establishing a New York menswear week in July. Although nothing’s confirmed yet, this could add an extra insight to the seasonal men’s collections of the other major fashion cities, and it would certainly help reduce the chaos and madness that often comes with NYFW in its current state. Meanwhile, this would definitely bolster the profile of New York’s menswear scene, and it could even boost the already increased public interest in the niche.
New York-based labels have often showed their men’s collections in Europe, like Alexander Wang, 3.1 Phillip Lim, DKNY, and Calvin Klein. And some New York brands’ refraining from designing for guys could be the result of the city’s slight disregard for the subject. But if the recent rumors are true, we can expect to see a major homecoming this summer. And who knows, maybe we could even see some of our favorite womenswear brands making pieces for the guys; wouldn’t it be great to see men’s collections from labels like Proenza Schouler, Altuzarra, or Rodarte? We also can’t forget about the emerging talents in the menswear sphere, and this new development could certainly help harvest new visions.
Only time will tell whether or not a men’s fashion week in New York will actually come to fruition. But let’s all keep our fingers crossed and think about all of the great things that would come of this. Stay tuned!
