In 2013, Scott Shapiro launched PHOSPHENES as a way to channel his creativity and knowledge of all things fashion. Originally just another fashion blog, the site eventually grew more and more, featuring full-length runway reports, in-depth articles and think pieces, and exclusive editorial photo shoots. Though still a student at the time of PHOSPHENES’ conception, his work for the site has allowed him the opportunity to intern at publications such as Harper’s Bazaar, V Magazine/VMAN, and Interview, leading to more official involvement in the fashion industry. Also through PHOSPHENES, Shapiro has been able to attend and cover several ready-to-wear and menswear fashion shows in New York, London, and Paris. Ultimately, this growth over time has led to increased collaboration and contribution from several of the fashion industry’s most promising young talents.
Scott sees fashion as an art form, capable of not only inspiring, but empowering individuals. However, this can only be possible if all people are included; PHOSPHENES is meant to be a creative platform that adequately represents a wide range of people, promoting diversity and positive female representation. Scott hopes that this will some day have a larger impact on how we define concepts such as “beauty” and “power,” and on the fashion industry as a whole. Though still a relatively new endeavor, PHOSPHENES continues to grow, gaining a larger following and establishing a solid team each day. On its way to becoming a reputable online fashion magazine, the website’s print edition will be formally debuting soon. This is only the beginning, so stay tuned for what’s to come.
