We suit up for battle, toward the front lines.
It takes quite a bit to truly stand out in today’s oversaturated fashion world; fanfare and hype only last so long, while authentic originality is a rarity. Cue Aweng Chuol, the rising star currently redefining traditional notions of beauty with her one-of-a-kind look, and expanding upon what it means to be a model with her drive, spirit, and bold visions for the future.
There are few models out there like Aweng, her flawless dark skin adorned by scars, her striking eyes changing color depending on climate, pollution, or allergies. It’s this unmistakable face – along with her vivacious personality – that has made her a muse for everyone from Demna Gvasalia to Tyler Mitchell and even Rihanna through her FENTY lines. In an industry that limits the amount of opportunities for models of color, forcing them to fit into certain boxes or standards, Aweng provides a new framework for what beauty means, with individuality triumphing over all. But Aweng is more than just her otherworldly features or her continuously expanding resume.
Born under a tree in a refugee camp in Kakuma, Kenya, Aweng is the oldest of 12 siblings. She is currently studying Psychology and Politics, eventually hoping to become the first female president of South Sudan. Aweng is vocal, not afraid to share the wisdom she possesses at only 21-years-old. An advocate for mental health, especially for refugees, as well as LGBTQ+ issues, she uses her growing platform to enlighten her followers in the fashion world and beyond. It’s this determination and passion that truly sets Aweng apart from the rest, holding the spirit of a young revolutionary in her heart. She continues to push on, soaring to the highest levels possible.
