THE GREAT ESCAPE
Let’s face it, real life is tough. Now more than ever, it seems like the world around us is – to put it bluntly – kind of falling apart. We’re in the midst of one of the most turbulent moments in recent history, and often times, current events leave us feeling hopeless.
Needless to say, we could use an escape.
Creativity – whether in the form of the visual arts, music, or of course, fashion – has always been the most effective channel for escaping the harsh realities of our times. That’s what initially drove Phosphenes at the time of its conception years ago, with our third issue taking things even further.
It goes without saying that fashion and fantasy have always gone hand-in-hand. With Phosphenes #3, we enhance this notion, unlocking some of our wildest dreams in the most bizarre corners of our imaginations. We speak to other creatives whose work allows them to escape reality, touching on what the idea of “fantasy” means to them. In our fashion pages, typical archetypes are reimagined, from fairytales to monsters and a variety of concepts in between. We even sit down with one of New York’s most fascinating drag queens, a walking fantasy herself.
Though certainly an outlet to reduce the trauma of the world around us, our version of fantasy is still very much rooted in reality; modern and multifaceted, we draw from society in order to look at things through our own unique lens. Through “Fantasy,” we hope to bring fashion back to a place of enjoyment and imagination, paving the way for a sense of optimism that we so desperately need right now.
Maybe things aren’t so bad after all. Or maybe they are. Let’s just pretend for a second that everything is okay.
